Most big electrics end up living in a rod holder. The Seaborg 500J is built for the anglers who'd rather hold the rod: a 500-size frame at just 750 g (26.5 oz), light enough to feel the bite and set the hook in-hand, with enough reel underneath to winch serious fish out of the rocky depths, and it's every bit at home in the holder when the sinker gets heavy.

MAGMAX-G muscle, JOG control

Daiwa's most advanced brushed motor, the MAGMAX-G (3-year motor warranty), puts out 165 lb (75 kgf) of momentary winding power and winds an outright fast 215 m/min at no load. The JOG POWER LEVER puts all of it under one thumb (speed and clutch together), so you play the fish like you would on conventional gear. HYPERDRIVE DIGIGEAR keeps the 3.8:1 hand-crank smooth under load (22.8" per turn on an adjustable 75-85 mm handle arm), and a MAGSEALED ball bearing on the spool shaft seals out water where corrosion starts, among 16 bearings plus 2 rollers.

Daiwa Seaborg 500J adjustable handle arm

Drag and the drop

Max drag is 50 lb (23 kg), deep-drop grade stopping power in a hand-held reel. Auto jigging programs, adjustable auto-stop, line feeding, fukase (bite-alarm) mode, fixed and constant-speed winding, timer and chum timer, depth alarms with revision, and a fishing-history log all run from the glare-resistant dot LCD, in feet or meters with multi-language display, counter lamp, and an overload breaker. Note: the rod clamp is sold separately on this model.

Runs on DC 12-16.8 V. Daiwa's Super Lithium or Tough Battery series is the recommended source; it will not run on household AC or 24 V boat power. Gulf and Atlantic anglers point it at tilefish, snapper, and grouper; out here it's deep rockfish, lingcod, and halibut.
