The MXL G2 5.8 MC is the mixed-use wide MX: one locked ratio to keep it simple, the magnet to cover the casting half, and 620 yards of 50 lb so a long topshot is still on the table. For the angler who throws lures about as often as he soaks bait.
The reason to step across from the MXJ is line format, not line class. Mono eats spool space much faster than braid does, so 300 yards of 50 lb braid under a 100-yard 40 lb mono topshot fits this reel and will not fit an MXJ. The MX size is settled at 40 lb and under either way.
